Formula

Gross rewards = annual spending × reward rate. Net rewards = gross rewards − annual fee. If net rewards are negative, the fee outweighs what you earn.

How it works

A fee card only wins if your spending earns more than the fee costs versus a no-fee alternative. Rewards are also only worth it if you pay in full — carrying a balance at 20%+ APR wipes out any 2% back many times over.

Frequently asked questions

Is an annual-fee card worth it?

Only if the rewards and perks you'll actually use exceed the fee compared with a no-fee card. This shows your net rewards; weigh perks like travel credits on top.

Do rewards matter if I carry a balance?

No. Interest at 20%+ APR dwarfs 1–2% rewards. Rewards cards pay off only when you pay the statement in full each month.

How do I value points?

Estimate the cash value of your points (often 1–2 cents each) and use that as your reward rate. Redemption value varies a lot by program and how you redeem.
