Formula
Future value = current balance compounded monthly, plus the future value of your monthly contributions. The real balance divides that by (1 + inflation) raised to the number of years.
How it works
Your balance grows two ways at once: your existing savings compound, and every new contribution starts compounding too. Because the result is also shown in today's dollars, you can see what the future balance is really worth once inflation is accounted for.
Frequently asked questions
Should I contribute enough to get the full employer match?⌄
Yes. An employer match is an immediate, guaranteed return on your contribution, so at a minimum contribute enough to capture all of it before directing savings elsewhere.
What rate of return should I assume?⌄
A long-run figure of roughly 6-7% after inflation (about 8-10% before) is common for a diversified, stock-heavy portfolio — but returns vary year to year and are never guaranteed.
Does the projected balance account for taxes?⌄
No. A traditional 401(k) is taxed when you withdraw in retirement, so your spendable amount is lower than the projected balance. A Roth 401(k) is taxed now and withdrawn tax-free.
Sources & methodology
Assumes a constant return with monthly compounding, plus an inflation adjustment for the real balance; excludes employer-match caps and taxes.
