Balloon Payment

A large lump sum due at the end of a balloon loan.

A balloon loan keeps monthly payments low by amortizing over a long schedule, but the remaining balance comes due as one large payment after a short term.

Balloon loans suit borrowers who plan to sell or refinance before the balloon is due — but require a clear exit plan, since the lump sum can be substantial.
