Price-to-Rent Ratio

A home's price divided by a year of rent for a similar place.

The price-to-rent ratio compares buying and renting: home price divided by annual rent. A lower ratio suggests buying is relatively cheap, a higher one favors renting.

As a rough guide, under 15 tends to favor buying and over 21 favors renting — a screening signal rather than a full decision.
