Formula
US 2025 progressive brackets: each slice of taxable income is taxed at its own rate (10%, 12%, 22%, 24%, 32%, 35%, 37%). Marginal rate is the rate on your last dollar; effective rate is total tax divided by taxable income.
How it works
A common myth is that moving into a higher bracket taxes all your income at that rate. It doesn't: only the income above each threshold is taxed at the higher rate. That's why your effective rate is always lower than your marginal rate.

What's the difference between marginal and effective rate?⌄
