Formula

Annual income from savings = savings × withdrawal rate. Divide by 12 for the monthly figure, then add any other monthly income to get your total.

How it works

The withdrawal rate is the lever: 4% a year has historically lasted about 30 years, but a lower rate is safer for a long retirement and a higher one risks running out. Layering Social Security or a pension on top reduces how much you need from savings.

Frequently asked questions

How much income will my savings give me?

At a 4% withdrawal rate, every $1,000,000 provides about $40,000 a year, or roughly $3,333 a month, before taxes. Adjust the rate for a more or less conservative plan.

What withdrawal rate is safe?

The 4% rule is the common benchmark for a ~30-year retirement. Many planners use 3–3.5% for longer retirements or cautious assumptions, and higher rates raise the risk of depleting savings.

Is this income before or after tax?

Before tax. Withdrawals from Traditional accounts are taxable, so your spendable income may be lower depending on your account mix and tax situation.

Sources & methodology

Savings × withdrawal rate ÷ 12, plus other income. Before tax; excludes inflation adjustments and market variability. Not financial advice.
